This gallery presents photographs from the collections of a number of photographers who specialised in recording the London bus and rail scene over the last 50-years.

This area will be dealing with the mainline railways of Southern England ~ whether that is the current scene or in the latter half of the 20th Century. Image galleries linked from here will most likely contain images that were taken since 2000 on a digital camera, and then digitally manipulated to produce the final released image.

Highlighting the past Railway Scene

Traditional cameras record their image onto light-sensitive silver-halide film. The film then needs to be chemically processed to produce a negative image from which positive prints can then be made. As a result of this process, the original photographer retained a physical negative of his work from which prints could easily be made, even if that was a century later. In the last century, there were many keen amateur photographers in the UK recording all types of railway and its infrastructure, some becoming household names. We have been looking back at our own photographic archive and will scan relevant negatives in order to feature some of these images in various galleries within this area of the website.
